αστέρι

Αστέρι, meaning “star” in Greek, as astrology originated in ancient Greece and Babylon. Its form was inspired by the zoetrope, a 19th-century pre-film animation device that creates the illusion of motion, while its engraved designs are based on horoscopes. Viewed from above, the horoscopes display their “positive side,” but when seen from a different angle or as their shadow on the wall, the “negative side” becomes visible. This duality encourages reflection on how appearances can be misleading. The installation is spinable, carrying the message that people should not be judged by outward appearances alone. It invites viewers to consider that personality and identity cannot be judged at a glance, while celebrating the richness and diversity of human traits.

About the Production
Αστέρι is my first self-led art installation, created using Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and laser cutting and engraving techniques. It explores personality, perception, and the duality of human traits through interactive design and motion.
I faced several challenges, including uncertainty about how to materialize my concept, finding fabrication services capable of laser cutting metals, and managing a budget of approximately $800 for fabrication.
Through research, material testing, and iterative design, I was able to translate my concept into a tangible, interactive installation. By experimenting with materials, testing engraving durability, and carefully combining digital design with manual finishing, I successfully created a work that embodies both aesthetic detail and conceptual depth.

Applications
The spinable installation projects moving shadows that reveal the duality of each zodiac, encouraging viewers to reflect on perception, identity, and personality. The combination of motion, light, and tactile interaction engages viewers in an intimate, personal experience.
