Through the Same Window

Through the Same Window explores how environmental changes shape emotional perception. Each window presents a natural scene, not as a literal landscape, but as a responsive psychological space. Through shifts in movement, rhythm, sound, colour, and scale, the same environment can be experienced in different ways.

Rather than assigning fixed meanings, emotions emerge through the behaviour of each scene. Subtle variations allow the same window to feel calm, tense, distant, or contemplative depending on how it is encountered. This approach invites viewers to interpret each moment based on their own perception, memory, and attention.

About the Production

Role: Sole creator

Tools: Adobe Illustrator, After Effects

This project investigates how animation can communicate internal states of mind without explicit narration, using nature as a metaphor for emotional experience.

One of the main challenges was translating nuanced emotions through simplified, stylized forms. Early iterations showed that a single, static scene was not enough to convey emotional complexity. In response, I developed multiple variations for each window, adjusting motion, pacing, colour, and scale to create subtle shifts in atmosphere.

Another challenge was rebuilding my technical workflow in Adobe After Effects after a long break, while also managing looping animations and pacing so that each scene felt active but not overwhelming.

To address this, I used After Effects expressions and JavaScript to automate motion, link properties, and create more fluid, responsive animations. This allowed me to focus on refining timing and variation, ensuring that each environment could shift in tone while maintaining visual consistency.
